The U.S. House of Representatives considers H.R.2400, the Pit River Land Transfer Act of 2025, on December 15, 2025.
The bill places about 548 acres in trust for the Pit River Tribe. The land is currently managed by the U.S. Forest Service in northern California.
“It is really a physical and spiritual landmark for the tribe, central to their identity and ability to thrive and grow on their own ancestral lands,” said Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-California), the sponsor of H.2400.
A hearing on the bill took place before the House Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs on April 30, 2025. Yatch Bamford, the chair of the Pit River Tribe, testified in support.
The House Committee on Natural Resources approved the bill at a markup on July 23, 2025.
Following consideration, the House passed H.R.2400 under a suspension of the rules.
