Oneida Nation disappointed by NFL's defense of racist mascot

NFL officials continued to defend the racist Washington mascot in a meeting with the Oneida Nation of New York, tribal leaders said on Wednesday.

Three NFL executives met with Oneida leaders in New York City to discuss the controversy. But the league won't be asking the team to drop the name despite widespread criticism.

“It just tells us we need to redouble our effort, and that’s what we’re going to do,” Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter said at a press conference, The Washington Post reported. “Believe me, we aren’t going away.”

Halbritter said the tribe will seek a meeting with all 32 NFL owners during Super Bowl week. They want to put more pressure on the Washington team.

The tribe is leading the Change the Mascot campaign.
