The Utah Division of Securities is warning Indian beneficiaries to watch out for scams as they receive a share of the $3.4 billion settlement to the Cobell trust fund lawsuit.

The settlement has been well publicized. So the state is worried that con artists will target tribal members in Utah.

"Our fear is that as we've seen with other high-profile lump sum payments, shortly after the con men follow the news and they see … people getting large checks," division director Keith Woodwell told The Deseret News.

Payments to Indian beneficiaries are expected to start flowing later this year.
