The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma got a new leader on Sunday although this one won't be in office too long.

Joe Crittenden was sworn in as deputy chief. But he also will serve as principal chief until the tribe votes again on September 24 to fill that post on a permanent basis.

"Although my tenure as principal chief may be brief, I have been entrusted with the momentous responsibilities of this office. I vow to always do the right thing for the right reasons," Crittenden said at the inauguration, The Cherokee Phoenix reported.

Crittenden will serve until the winner of a new election between incumbent Chad Smith and challenger Bill John Baker is declared.

Council Speaker Meredith Frailey was sworn in as interim deputy chief.
