Joe Crittenden was certified as the winner of the deputy chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

Crittenden defeated Chris Soap in a run-off on Saturday. Both candidates are sitting council members.

Crittenden will be sworn into office on August 14. According to the tribe's attorney general, he can act as principal chief until that post is filled by a special election later this year between incumbent Chad Smith and challenger Bill John Baker.

Baker endorsed Crittenden. Smith was running with Soap.
