Candidates for chief of Cherokee Nation debate the issues

The two candidates for principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma participated in a debate on Monday night.

Incumbent Chad Smith is seeking a third term in office. He is facing a challenge from Bill John Baker, a tribal council member.

Smith and Baker agreed on few issues, The Tulsa World reported. But both said they would abide by the tribe's court decision on the status of the Freedmen, who are the descendants of former slaves held within the tribe.

The election is June 25.
