Members of Cayuga Nation push BIA to recognize new leadership

Members of the Cayuga Nation of New York are asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs to recognize their new leaders.

Tribal members removed Clint Halftown as their federally recognized representative at a council meeting on June 2. They want the BIA to recognize William Jacobs and Samuel George as their new leaders.

Tribal members also removed Tim Twoguns and Gary Wheeler, allies of Halftown, from the council. They are accusing the trio of damaging the tribe's relationship with state and local governments.

“We need open dialogue and that takes an open mind,” Karl Hill, a representative of the Heron Clan, said at a press conference, The Auburn Citizen reported. “We need to sit down and talk to each other.”
