Supporters of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota asked the North Dakota Board of Higher Education to extend an October 1 deadline on the issue.
Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation voted to support the nickname and logo. The tribal council passed a resolution affirming the vote.
Supporters believe members of the Standing Rock Sioux
Tribe will stand by the nickname and logo. But Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder said tribal leaders won't schedule a referendum.
"Let's move forward with this," His Horse Is Thunder told the board yesterday, the Associated Press reported.
Without tribal support, UND will have to eliminate the nickname and logo.
