North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said hopes the state Board of Higher Education extends a deadline on the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.
Stenehjem said he's heard rumors the board might extend the deadline by a few weeks. That might give "Sioux" supporters more time to convince the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake
Dakotah Nation to officially endorse the nickname.
Spirit Lake voters support the nickname but the tribal council hasn't taken action to endorse the name.
Standing Rock leaders have declined to call a vote on the issue.
