Voters of theSpirit Lake Dakotah
Nation have apparently backed the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota in overwhelming numbers.
The Grand Forks Herald said it was trying to verify the results. But a supporter told the paper that 67 percent backed the controversial name.
UND agreed to stop using Indian imagery unless it could get the support of the Spirit Lake Nation and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Leaders at Standing Rock already voted against the name but some members want a referendum like the one at Spirit Lake.
