Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah
Nation will be able to vote on the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo of the University of North Dakota.
Opponents claimed some of the signatures on a petition that was used to put the issue on Tuesday's ballot were invalid. But a judge rejected the argument.
Supporters hope a favorable vote will allow UND to keep the "Sioux" name. The school has agreed to stop using Indian imagery unless the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe back it.
Some opponents at Spirit Lake have circulated a flier that claims Ralph Engelstad, a major alumni backer, referred to Indians with a derogatory term. Engelstad paid for the UND arena that contains thousands of "Fighting Sioux" logos and a statue of an Indian on a horse.
