EPA to use stimulus funds to clean up Elem Reservation
The Environmental Protection Agency will use up to $5 million in stimulus funds to clean up the reservation of the Elem Tribe of California. The reservation was contaminated by mercury and arsenic after the Bureau of Indian Affairs used soil from a nearby mercury mine to construct roads and home building pads for the tribe, The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported. The Sulphur Bank Mercury Mine has been declared a Superfund site. The EPA started to clean up the reservation in the late 1990s but work has been hampered by lack of funds. The money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will change that. "The stimulus money is for shovel-ready projects," Richard Sugarek, an EPA site manger, told the paper. The EPA is still finalizing a cleanup plan for the Sulphur Bank Mercury Mine. Get the Story:
