Lawmakers in Oneida County, New York, held a public meeting on the Oneida Nation's land-into-trust request.
According to The Oneida Dispatch, more than 100 residents and lawmakers attended the hearing
At least 25 were tribal employees, who came to support the tribe's application.
"Upstate Citizens for Equality was saying that this is what they have been waiting for, a knock-down drag-out fight. They don't represent me. The Nation and the county are trying to move on with dialogue, negotiations and common sense," employee Frank Sperduto said, the paper reported.
Others, however, want the county to fight. "We've heard about how much the nation employees appreciate their jobs. Politicians who ignore the law because they are worried about jobs, are worried about their jobs," said Dave Vickers, the president of the Upstate Citizens for Equality, an anti-Indian group.
The county wanted the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take about 1,000 acres in trust for the tribe.
