With test at Navajo, IHS prepares for flu outbreak

A mass vaccination of 24,000 members of the Navajo Nation has helped the Indian Health Service prepare for a pandemic outbreak, officials said.

Working with the tribe, two states and three counties, the agency vaccinated tribal members at 15 sites across the reservation. It was the largest such effort in the U.S., the IHS said.

The agency used Incident Management System, an online tool, to oversee the effort. The system provided two-way voice communication, text messaging and automated alerts.

The Health and Human Services Department wants to expand the project to other reservations later this year.
