The ousted chairman of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona will keep his job for another three weeks as legal and political battles continue.
Ben Nuvamsa was removed in March after less than a month on the job. After taking the tribal council to court, he will be able to stay in office until June 22, when another hearing will be set.
Meanwhile, a tribal judge ordered Secretary Mary Felter to be jailed on a contempt of court charge. She had refused to recognize Nuvamsa as chairman. Vice Chairman Todd Honyaoma Sr. was previously jailed on a contempt charge.
"Do not put me in that position of enforcing this order. I do not want to do that and I will do that if necessary," Judge Geoffrey Tager said, The Gallup Independent reported.
