A group of Hopi council members want the tribe to hold a new election because they say man who won the chairman's race doesn't meet residency requirements.
Benjamin Nuvamsa won the February 7 special election. But the council members, some of whom supported Nuvamsa, say he hasn't lived on the reservation for two years prior to his campaign.
Nuvamsa said he has maintained his residence on the reservation. He said he was certified to run for office by the tribal election board.
The special election was called because former chairman Ivan Sidney was removed from office following an alcohol-related incident off the reservation.
