Ben Nuvamsa, the former chairman of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, is trying to get his job back.
Nuvamsa filed suit against several members of the tribal council. He said they overstepped their authority by removing him from office, effectively overriding the results of an election.
At issue is whether Nuvamsa meets the tribe's residency requirements to hold public office. Some claim he didn't live on the reservation for at least two years before running for chairman.
The council met on Monday to consider the issue but voted against rescinding the resolution that removed Nuvamsa from office. Another meeting is planned on April 30.
