The Karuk Tribe in northern California says highly toxic levels of algae in the Klamath River are caused by dams in the basin.

The Karuks and other tribes have called for the removal of the dams. PacifiCorp is seeking to relicense the operation but a spokesperson said removing the dams might not address the algae problem.

State and federal officials are warning people to avoid the algae because it can cause respiratory problems, organ failure and other problems.
