The Indian Health Service and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota announced a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on cancer and other health issues facing Native Americans.

The agreement calls for collaboration in five areas: education and training of Native students; career opportunities for Native workers; research on health issues; funding to support research and services; and cost-effective health care and preventive services.

Overall, cancer rates among American Indians and Alaska Natives are lower than rates among the general population. But among tribal members in the Northern Plains, Minnesota and Alaska, the rates of certain cancers are higher due to tobacco use and other factors.
