Abramoff Scandal
AP: DeLay knew Abramoff arranged overseas trip

Federal prosecutors have e-mails showing that Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) knew convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff arranged financing for a 2000 trip to Scotland and England, the Associated Press reports.

DeLay's office contacted Abramoff's firm to account for the cost of the trip. But in his report to Congress, he said a non-profit organization funded the trip. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, one of Abramoff's clients, contributed $25,000 towards the trip.

At the time, Tony Rudy was DeLay's chief of staff. He left to work with Abramoff and has since pleaded guilty to acts of bribery and corruption that started in DeLay's office.

As a result of legal troubles, DeLay stepped won as House majority leader and decided not to seek re-election. He could face an indictment over his connections to Abramoff.
