Beset by legal troubles as the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal inches closer, Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) plans to retire from Congress rather than seek re-election.
DeLay faces trial on Texas on charges that he violated state law by injecting corporate money into state elections. More severely, he faces potential bribery charges as a result of his relationship with Abramoff, a former lobbyist and sentenced felon.
DeLay once called Abramoff one of his "closest friends." A former aide -- a lobbyist who worked with Abramoff -- just pleaded guilty to defrauding tribes and corruption that started within DeLay's office. Another former aide is under investigation as part of the widening Abramoff probe.
