An overwhelming number of parents have pulled their students out of Navajo Prep amid allegations of multiple, unreported suicide attempts at the Bureau of Indian Affairs school in New Mexico.
Since a 16-year-old female student was found dead last week, only 20 out of 300 students remain at the school. Parents and students have questioned the school's response to suicide incidents, with one parent alleging two recent attempts in addition to the suicide of a 17-year-old male student last fall.
Police in Farmington say they have only been called out twice to the school to deal with suicides. But a detective said it is up to the school to notify the police in case of a suicide or suicide attempt.
After the suicide last fall, a counselor said most of the students at the school are suffering from depression.
