Tribal member eyes creation of Native university

Ron Volesky, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, is leading a group that hopes to create a Native university at the site of the former Si Tanka/Huron University in Huron, South Dakota.

But with the site going to auction on May 5, Volesky says he's running out of time. He said he hopes the property doesn't end up being used for non-educational purposes.

The Huron site served as an off-reservation campus for Si Tanka University, the tribal college on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. But due to financial problems that predated the tribe's acquisition of the property, Si Tanka declared bankruptcy and a bank paid $3.9 million for the land.
