Tribe finds money to keep Si Tanka University open

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is planning to set aside $1.2 million in loans and grants to keep Si Tanka University open until the end of the spring semester.

The money will prevent the off-reservation campus in Huron from closing. Officials said they didn't enough money to keep operating past April 1.

The money also will help the on-reservation campus in Eagle Butte. The tribe and the university are still waiting for an answer from the Bureau of Indian Affairs over federal funding for Native students.
