Saginaw Chippewa Tribe gets backing on land claim

The federal government has joined the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe in its suit against the state of Michigan.

The tribe says the state isn't recognizing the boundaries of the Isabella Reservation. The lawsuit, filed in late 2005, cites two treaties and an executive order that set aside land for the tribe.

The federal government joined the suit to block the state from exercising jurisdiction over Indian Country. But the state claims the reservation is down to just 800 acres.
