The state of Michigan says it will challenge the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe's claim to six towns in Isabella County.

State attorney general Paul L. Adams filed court papers in response to the tribe's lawsuit. He said the state will argue that the tribe gave up their claims to the land and waited too long to file the lawsuit.

The tribe argues that treaties in 1855 and 1864 created the Isabella Reservation. The tribe is asking a federal judge to declare that the reservation still exists and that the state has no jurisdiction over six towns.
