The Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation of North Dakota is at least $80 million in debt, The New Town News reports.
The tribe amassed the debt over a four-year period starting in 2002. In 2005, the tribe took out a $19 million loan.
Auditors are trying to figure out if more money is owed. They are eying the books of several tribal enterprises.
"We need to get it done," newly elected chairman Marcus Wells Jr., told the newspaper. "Enterprises, here we come."
Earlier this month, Wells defeated Tex Hall, who ran the tribe for two four-year terms, during which the debt grew.
