The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs launched a major study to discover how to prevent youth suicide.
The three-year project is being conducted in conjunction with the University of Manitoba's Centre for Aboriginal Health Research. It will employ Native people, who will conduct outreach to Native communities to learn more about suicide prevention.
According to the chiefs, the suicide rate among Native youth is five to seven times higher than that of non-Native youth.
