Field hearing set on suicide among Native youth

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will hold a field hearing on Indian youth suicide prevention in North Dakota on Monday.

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the vice chairman committee, will conduct the hearing. It takes place on Monday from 10:30am to 12:30pm in the Brynhild Haugland Room of the State Capitol Building on 600 East Boulevard Avenue in Bismarck.

According to the United Tribes Technical College, the witness list includes Dr. Charles Grim, the director of the Indian Health Service, Dr. Jon Perez, the IHS director of Behavioral Health, Denise Middlebrook, a project officer with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and Ulonda Shamwell, a policy coordination director at SAMHSA.

Representatives and witnesses from North Dakota tribal nations will also present testimony, UTTC said. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Dorgan will also conduct a hearing in Washington, D.C., on suicide among Native youth in June.
