The Karuk Tribe of California is joining federal and county authorities in offering a reward of up to $21,000 for information about a fire that destroyed a sacred dance house.
"Members of the tribe, members of the community, investigators -- no one believes that this was an accident," Vice Chairman Leaf Hillman told The Redding Record Searchlight.
The house was destroyed in the early morning of July 1. The fire is still being investigated but this is the second time in less than 10 years that the structure has been burned.
The dance house was located on federal land, in the ancient Karuk village of Katimiin. It was used for the Brush Dance, a children's healing ceremony.
