County seeks better relations with Cow Creek Band

Commissioners in Douglas County, Oregon, said they want to improve relations with the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians but one official remains at odds over a pending land-into-trust application.

The board of commissioners voted 2-1 to seek a new agreement with the tribe. They also voted 2-1 to rescind a public vote on the land-into-trust issue.

The action came after Oregon's two senators wrote a letter, urging a resolution to an "impasse" on the tribe's application. But commissioner Marilyn Kittelman, who has been accused of making racist statements about the tribe, voted against the resolutions.
