Legislation would add 2,000 miles to Trail of Tears

Legislation pending in Congress would add about 2,000 miles to the Trail of Tears.

The trail covers 2,200 miles of land and water routes in nine states. The bill adds sites that tribal leaders and historians say have been forgotten.

The federal government rounded up 75,000 members of southeast tribes and forced them to Oklahoma in the 1830s. Among the Cherokees alone, about 4,000 died on the way.
