A Tennessee lawmaker introduced a bill on Tuesday to seek better documentation of the Trail of Tears.
Congress created the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail in 1987. But the trail is not complete and contains some mistakes.
The Trail of Tears Documentation Act would correct that. It requires the Interior Department to review new evidence and suggest new routes, land components, and campgrounds to be added to the national trail.
An estimated 15,000 Cherokees were forced to leave their homelands in the southeastern U.S. by President Andrew Jackson. One-quarter of them died along the way to Oklahoma.
