Native protest not over at construction site
Monday, April 24, 2006
Hundreds of Native protesters continue to occupy a construction site in Ontario amid talks with the province over a possible settlement to the long-running land dispute. The protesters, from the Six Nations Reserve, are expected to stay another two weeks in hopes of reaching an agreement. A government negotiator said talks were productive but said a deal wasn't imminent. The protest began February 28 to block construction of luxury homes on land that tribal members say was stolen from them. The occupation went largely unnoticed until last week, when police mounted an early morning raid and arrested some people. Some tribal members subsequently blocked freight and passenger rail service between Montreal and Toronto. Get the Story:
