"It was a depressingly familiar scene. Burning barricades, Indian protestors tussling with heavily armed police over a land dispute, injuries on both sides, arrests. And angry rhetoric threatening further violence.
No one came off looking good after yesterday's violence at the Six Nations territory south of Hamilton. It conjured up unsettling images of the Oka, Que., golf course blockade in 1990; of the 1995 shooting of Dudley George at Ontario's Ipperwash Provincial Park; and of last year's Adams Lake video gaming standoff in British Columbia.
This is not how we resolve disputes in this country. These confrontations give us a black eye internationally, put lives at risk and poison the goodwill needed to resolve problems. Whatever the rights and wrongs, cooler heads and the law must prevail and anarchy must be rejected."
