A tax firm in Miami has been accused by the IRS of filing false tax returns for members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
Labib Baltagi Inc., the operators of 20 tax firm franchises, told at least 32 tribal members they could claim an exemption on gaming-related income, the IRS says. The total in false claims is more than $222,000, the IRS alleges in a federal lawsuit.
Baltagi is represented by Jim Rodio of the Holland & Knight firm. Rodio said Baltagi relied on incorrect information from an outside source and is preparing amended tax returns for the Seminoles.
