Billy Mills urges youth to challenge perceptions

Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, spoke at the McCrossan Boys Ranch in South Dakota on Thursday.

Mills, 67, is the only Native American and the only American to have won the gold meal for the 10,000-meter run. He broke the record for the run at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Mills told youth at the ranch, about half of whom are Native, to follow their dreams. He said their greatest challenge will be to fight perceptions of being poor and Native.
