The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe said it won't enter into an agreement with the New York Alcohol, Tobacco, Tax and Trade Bureau over cigarette manufacturing on the Akwesasne Reservation.
The tribe had been in talks with the bureau but said rejected a proposed agreement. The tribe will leave it up to individual cigarette manufacturers whether they want to obtain a permit from the state.
The tribe said it will provide assistance to manufacturers if they go that route. The tribe also said the bureau must obtain the permission of the tribe before coming on the reservation to perform inspections.
