Cecelia Fire Thunder, the first female president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, was suspended on Tuesday pending a full hearing on two complaints.
The tribal council accepted the complaint filed against Fire Thunder. A hearing will be held within 20 days to consider whether she will be removed from office.
William Birdnecklace Tate, a former tribal employee, and Juanita Scherich, a council member, filed the complaints. They accuse Fire Thunder of not being enrolled in the tribe, of mismanagement and of starting a project without council approval.
Fire Thunder says she is confident she will be cleared. She is scheduled to be in Tulsa next week for the National Congress of American Indians annual conference. She is running for secretary.
