Rosebud Sioux Tribe holds 24-hour walk-a-thon

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is holding a 24-hour walk-a-thon to call attention to the diabetes epidemic facing Native people.

The first-ever walk begins today at 6pm and will be preceded by a meal and prayer at 5pm. Spiritual leaders will lead additional prayers 6 p.m. and midnight Thursday, sunrise and 6 p.m. Friday, when the walk ends.

Tate Haukaas, the student coordinator for the Sinte Gleska University Diabetes Initiative, said diabetes is entirely preventable. "A lot of our people are in denial about the disease and their need for medical attention," she told The Rapid City Journal.
