The NCAA will ask broadcast and cable outlets not to use "hostile and abusive" mascot names during post-season tournaments, Broadcasting & Cable reports.
NCAA spokesperson Bob Williams said some media outlets already use the school name rather than the mascot name during broadcasts. But he wouldn't say whether the NCAA's upcoming contracts with outlets would prohibit the use of the mascot names. The current contracts don't speak to the issue.
A spokesperson for ESPN told Broadcasting & Cable that the network would consider NCAA's request.
In the Washington, D.C., area, a law school professor has asked broadcasting networks not to use the "Redskins" name.
