The Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma will go ahead with a July 9 election despite a judge's order to delay it so that more people can vote.
A group of 156 tribal members called the Kiowa Project for Democracy sued the tribe when they were denied a chance to vote. A judge with the U.S. Court of Indian Offenses ruled that the tribal members were wrongly excluded and ordered the election to be delayed until August.
The Kiowa Tribe's business committee has decided to ignore the decision. Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma), a member of the Chickasaw Nation and the only Native American in Congress, has called on the Interior Department to investigate.
