Leaders of the Narragansett Tribe met with Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) and other top state officials on Thursday to discuss the recent court ruling in the smoke shop case.
The 1st Circuit Court of Appeals said the tribe has a right to run a smoke shop although it must collect taxes on the sale of goods to non-Indians. But the state disagrees and is taking the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Narragansett Chief Sachem said the tribe still plans on reopening the shop after the legal appeals are exhausted. Cariceri, however, said the tribe should give up the idea and accept his offer of $10 million a year through a gaming deal with a non-Indian racetrack.
