Faculty at troubled Si Tanka University campus quit

Faculty at the off-reservation campus of Si Tanka University decided to quit on Monday after not being paid for more than a month.

Steve Fryberger, the chairman of the athletic training education department, said the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe wasn't planning on paying the faculty at the Huron campus. He said an overwhelming majority agreed quitting before the end of the spring semester was the right decision.

The tribe agreed to extend a loan of up to $400,000 to Si Tanka although most of the money would go to the on-reservation campus in Eagle Butte. But the bailout hit a snag when the IRS put a hold on the loan due to Si Tanka's financial woes.
