Eight members of the American Indian Movement held a protest against Florida State University's "Seminoles" mascot on Monday.
AIM says FSU needs to get approval from all Seminole people to use the mascot. So far, the Seminole Tribe of Florida has given its support. The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma says it won't object to the mascot. Tribal support led NCAA to exempt the school from its ban on Indian mascots during post-season tournaments.
The AIM protest took place as FSU played its NCAA season opener. Kyle Doney, a senior civil engineering student and member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, planted Chief Osceola's "flaming spear" before the start of the first game.
The Chief Osceola mascot is portrayed by another student.
