The state of New York and two Wisconsin tribes are negotiating a land claim settlement in light of two recent court decisions.
But the parties disagree about the status of the negotiations, The Syracuse Post-Standard reports. A tribal lawyer said a deal with the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans and the Oneida Nation has been reached. But a state lawyer said talks are ongoing.
Gov. George Pataki (R) previously settled with the tribes but pulled back the deals in light of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Oneida Nation case. Based on that decision, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals then threw out the Cayuga land claim..
