House ethics chairman said to consider stepping down

The chairman of the House ethics committee might quit his post over the Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) controversy, The New York Times reports.

Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Washington) is said to have grown tired of the stalemate with Democrats over the potential DeLay investigation. He is also being criticized for ties to DeLay and disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, with some saying he should recuse himself.

Hastings represents Washington's 4th District, which includes parts of the Yakama Nation. He introduced a bill that would amend the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) to allow scientific study of remains like the Kennewick Man, whom the Yakama Nation claims as an ancestor [House Testimony].
