Two New York counties that received land stolen from the Oneida Nation are said to be talking with Gov. George Pataki (R) about settling the tribe's claim.
Pataki's office wouldn't confirm details but said negotiations are underway.
Madison County and Oneida County representatives met with Pataki staff yesterday as the governor announced a settlement for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe.
A deal to settle the 250,000-acre Oneida claim would include the Oneidas of Wisconsin and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans from Wisconsin, The Albany Times-Union reports.
Pataki's staff wanted to put the tribes in the Mohawk bill, the paper said.
Deals with the Cayuga Nation of New York and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma are less secure, according to the paper.
