A new law in Arizona is designed to improve housing conditions for low-income tribal members by giving tribes an off-reservation property tax exemption.

Tribes can obtain the exemption only on housing built with tribal funds or through the Native American Housing and Self-Determination Act. The housing also must be used for low-income tribal members.

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe spearheaded the initiative because many tribal members live off-reservation in Tucson, where housing prices are on the rise. Tribal officials say the tax break will put housing in the reach of low-income Yaquis.
