Unrecognized tribe protests state education bill

The Duwamish Tribe of Washington says an education bill nearing approval in the State Legislature discriminates against landless and unrecognized tribes.

The bill encourages public schools to teach about tribes "whose reservation lands, in whole or in part, are within the boundaries of the school district." But since the Duwamish Tribe lacks a land base, chairwoman Cecile Hansen called it "further genocide -- pure and simple."

Rep. John McCoy (D), a member of the Tulalip Tribes, sponsored the bill. He encouraged the Duwamish to work with the recognized Muckleshoots, a suggestion rejected by Hansen. She told The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, "If any tribe opposes the Duwamish, it's the Muckleshoot."
